What’s Happening? February Events

January 31, 2024

Ah, February! It is the official month of hearts, and we think you will enjoy these upcoming events that you will surely fall in love with. This month brings you a brand-new festival that celebrates and brings awareness to hip-hop and theatre, the most highly anticipated Broadway show about a magical princess that freezes over the entire kingdom, and the largest winter celebration!

Break out of hibernation early and come and celebrate all the festivities that are happening in February here in the Nation’s Capital!

Winterlude is BACK! Experience the ultimate Canadian winter festival that happens each year for three weekends in February. Prepare to be astonished by ice-sculpture competitions, Dragon Boat Races and skating around the world-famous Rideau Canal and watch amazing performances from National and Local artists.

📅 February 2nd to February 19th

NAC Hip Hop Theatre Festival

Emerging in the 1970s from disenfranchised Black communities in the Bronx, hip-hop has deeply influenced Canadian culture for over four decades. The five elements of deejaying, emceeing, graffiti, breaking and knowledge characterize hip-hop not only as a musical genre but also a lifestyle and culture – a highly performative art form boasting a rich history of international events that pay homage to hip-hop’s inherently theatrical foundation. Inspired by this reality, the NAC Hip Hop Theatre Festival invites you to join us as we celebrate the power found at this intersection.

The eleven-day festival will revolve around the text-based essence of hip-hop, opening with a free monumental Hip Hop Cypher. Subsequent performances will encompass battle rap, spoken word, staged readings, panels, concerts, and virtual events, all aimed at broadening our perspective on how we view and experience theatre at its core.

Waahli is a Montréal-based artist of Haitian descent. Raised in a family where music was ever-present, he grew up listening to traditional Haitian melodies by artists such as Tabou Combo, Coupé Cloué and Manno Charlemagne, and taught himself to play the guitar. Although heavily influenced by Haitian music, it was through hip hop that he developed his own style. With his traditional rhythms, brilliant beatboxing riffs and powerful lyrics, Waahli delivers an alternative hip hop that transports us to the four corners of the world.
