How to Spend Labour Day Weekend in Ottawa’s Original Downtown

September 3, 2026

Summer is coming to an end, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make the most of the last weekend of summer. Ottawa’s Original Downtown is the perfect place to explore this Labour Day weekend. From art galleries, to outdoor activities, there is fun around every corner. Here you guide to an amazing Labour Day weekend in downtown Ottawa.

Go swimming at the East Wharf Dock

The new East Wharf Dock is perfect for catching rays and cooling off right in the downtown core. The dock is situated on the Rideau River and you can access it by walking past the Rideau Locks and the Bytown Museum. Make a day of it and pack a picnic, enjoy the historic sights, then go for a dip in the river.

Catch up with friends on your favourite patio

Ottawa’s Original Downtown is home to so many incredible restaurants and patios, and this is the perfect weekend to grab your bestie and visit one – or more! Grab brunch, cocktails, appetizers or dinner and spend the day people watching, catching up and indulging in incredible food and drinks.

Explore world-class art at the National Gallery of Canada

Ottawa’s Original Downtown is home to many museums and galleries, including the National Gallery of Canada. The National Gallery features a massive variety of art including contemporary, impressionism, and a gallery dedicated to Canadian artists. If you want to start your weekend activities a little early, the museum offers free admission Thursday nights between 5PM – 8PM.

Go back in time at the Bytown Museum

Speaking of museums, the Bytown Museum is the perfect place to learn more about Ottawa’s history and what life was like in the city formally known as Bytown. In fact, to celebraate the 200th anniversary of Bytown, the museum is running a limited time exhibit called “What’s in the Frame”, highlighting people from the past and present who have made a difference in their respective communities.

Rent a Bike and ride along the Rideau Canal

If you are looking to get a bit of exercise this Labour Day Weekend, biking along the canal is a great way to experience Ottawa and have fun. If you don’t own a bike, you can rent one at Rent a Bike in Ottawa’s Original Downtown. There are both adult and kids bikes available so you can take a ride with your whole family.

Go Back-to-School shopping at the CF Rideau Centre

If you are ready to kick off the school year, look no further than the CF Rideau Centre for all of your back to school shopping needs. Whether you are stocking up on university basics, setting up your child for success, or looking for professional looks to wear in your classroom, the CF Rideau Centre has something for every occasion and budget.
