Father’s Day Experiences in Ottawa’s Original Downtown

June 6, 2024

Dads (and father figures everywhere!) play a huge role in our lives – as children they held our hands when we crossed the street and taught us how to be big and strong, and as adults they are always there to lighten the mood with a joke!

This year, celebrate the incredible father figure in your life with a day out in Ottawa’s Original Downtown!

Make this shopping trip all about dad and take him to his favourite stores over at the CF Rideau Centre. The Rideau Centre offers a variety of high-class stores that caters to any type of father figure. If he’s looking for sportier, check out Sport Chek, the ultimate store that offers equipment for any type of sport or hobby. Is your dad a sneaker head? No problem, you have to stop by Champs or venture off to Rideau Street and check legendary sneaker head paradise, NRML. Your Dad dresses cool but casual, step into Frank and Oak for all the cool dad apparel.

After a fun day of shopping, treat him to an ice-cold beer. If you are looking for a cozy patio with a wide selection of in-house craft beer and addicting pub nosh, you must head to Clocktower Brew Pub!

Movie Buffs

Is your dad the type of dad that can remember every line to his favourite movies and absolutely gives you that dad look that tells you politely to zip it if you keep asking more questions? Oh yes, we know that look. Treat him to a night out at the ByTowne Cinema, Ottawa’s oldest cinemas that offer showings of timeless classics and blockbuster worthy.

You must take Dad out to one of ByTowne’s Drunken Cinema showing of The Mummy! Get tipsy while you watch this 1999 classic of ancient curses, non-stop action and yes, a little romance. This showing is on May 31st, a little earlier than Father’s Day, but you don’t need one specific date to treat him.

Outdoor Adventurers

Take Dad for a ride and show him what there is to offer in Ottawa’s Original Downtown. Ride along the Rideau Canal towards the Rideau Locks, where there are bike paths that show you many angles of the Ottawa River. Ride along Wellington Street past Parliament Hill and then down to the historic Fairmont Chateau Laurier and Senate building, which will take you to the ByWard Market.

If you’re looking for access to a bike, we highly recommend RentABike! They have been around for over 30 years in Ottawa’s Original Downtown, serving and renting out bicycles for locals and tourists and let us tell you, they know their bikes.

If your dad enjoys the simple pleasure in life and loves the thoughtfulness that goes into making his day, organize a picnic with some of his favourite things and reminisce about the good ol’ days! We’ve helped you out with your picnic shopping list and recommend a few spots to grab the essentials.

Head down to La Bottega, as they make the best sandwiches in Ottawa and offers the best array of fine cheeses and meats for a charcuterie suitable for an afternoon picnic. Make you remember the antipasto platter to go with everything.
