Everything You Need to Know About OAG’s “Hungry Eyes”

December 14, 2023

Earlier this year, the Ottawa Art Gallery announced the debut of their latest program “Hungry Eyes,” an experience that promises to be unlike anything else available in the Nation’s Capital. A fusion of both the visual and culinary arts, “Hungry Eyes” offers participants the opportunity to truly immerse themselves in the medium of film by serving dishes that appear in, or are otherwise representative of, the film patrons watch!

We had the opportunity to sit in during a “Hungry Eyes” screening of “Julie and Julia,” and we have all the insider secrets and perks that patrons can expect when they attend the event. Read on to find out everything you need to know!

Getting There

First off, you can purchase your tickets on the Eventbrite page that OAG has created for the event, which we’ve included here. You can choose to attend any of their screenings of “It’s A Wonderful Life” on December 17, or 21, which are certain to make for an unforgettable holiday experience!

The OAG has also made it clear that space for this event is extremely limited due to its popularity, and tickets are selling fast. Make sure you grab yours as soon as possible!

On the day of the event, we suggest parking in one of the nearby lots if you are making your way over by car. The closest lots include the Novotel parking lot and any of the three lots at the CF Rideau Centre. (Click here to read our blog about where to find parking in the area!)

Once you enter the OAG, follow the signage in the gallery to the Alma Duncan Salon, which is located on the third floor.

Buy your tickets to Hungry Eyes early if you’re hoping to get in!

Settling In

Before you take your seat in the salon, be sure to take a few pictures with your friends at the photo booth located outside the salon. It comes complete with speech bubbles that include quotes from the film you’ll be watching!

After you’ve shown the usher your ticket, you’ll be treated to an alcoholic beverage included as part of the price of admission. Attendees who attend a screening of “It’s a Wonderful Life” can expect a cranberry mimosa with sparkling wine as well as pineapple and cranberry juice. Non-alcoholic options are available upon request as well.

More exciting surprises await you when you take your seat at your table! Each guest will have an assortment of vouchers and coupons on their plate, including:

Enjoy a serving of popcorn while conversing with your fellow movie-goers and taking in music from the film. The movie itself is projected onto the Alma Duncan Salon’s 35-foot screen, so no need to worry about being unable to see the movie from where you’re sitting!

Grab a speech bubble and strike a pose in the photo booth before you take your seat in the salon!

The Show Begins

At the screening of “Julie & Julia,” it isn’t long after Amy Adams’ character mentions Cobb-Wedge Salad that the exact same salad is brought out to patrons. Every aspect of the three-course meal is expertly hand crafted by the culinary team at Norca Restaurant & Bar, the in-house restaurant at Le Germain Hotel Ottawa. You can taste the love and care put into each dish by the staff, all made from fresh ingredients.

First course: Cobb-Wedge Salad. The marinated feta in the dish is to die for!

Following the entrée, patrons are treated to a second course consisting of beef bourguignon (or mushroom bourguignon for vegetarians) with perfectly braised chunks of beef, duchess potatoes, brussels sprouts, roasted baby turnips and cippolini onion confit, all glazed with a delectable jus. Luckily, this beef bourguignon is much better than Amy Adams’ effort in the film!

Second course: beef bourguignon. The beef is braised so perfectly that Julia Child herself would be jealous!

Lastly, patrons are treated to a sample of Julia Child’s chocolate cream pie towards the film’s conclusion, topped with fresh berries and gold shavings as well as a fresh mint leaf on the bottom of each serving.

Final course: chocolate cream pie. Complete with icing that melts in your mouth!

All in all, “Hungry Eyes” is one of the most unique events currently being held in the Nation’s Capital, and it’s all happening right here in Ottawa’s Original Downtown! Click here to visit the Eventbrite page for the event and purchase your tickets. Act fast as space is limited!
