With an extensive selection of local acts as well as artists from abroad making an appearance in the area this month, there’s no shortage of exciting opportunities to discover your new favourite underground musician. Read on to get all the details on some of the artists performing in Ottawa’s Original Downtown and the ByWard Market this January!

Wizards of Winter

Looking to dance the night away? Mark your calendars for this event taking place at Café Dekcuf this month! The Wizards of Winter are here to blast away your winter blues with a full evening of trance and dance music performed by local DJs and music producers. Join NojNor, Kronofrost, Infinite Improbability and Sonowolf for a heart-pounding evening of sonic wizardry and musical experimentation. It’s a night that dance music fans can’t afford to miss!

Maten

For over 20 years, Québec folk rockers Maten have been captivating audiences both within their home province and across the country by infusing folk and rock music with their Innu roots. The band is currently in the process of promoting their latest album “Utenat,” which tells a genuine and earnest tale of life on Québec’s North Shore, delving into both the positive and negative aspects. Their music creates a sound and experience that is all their own and is certain to enthrall any and audiences who are fortunate enough to catch them live.

Kasador, Neon Ghosthouse, Noise Hotel

Get ready for the night of your dreams, indie rock lovers! Kingston’s Kasador will be making an appearance alongside locals Neon Ghosthouse and Noise Hotel for a high energy evening in the Market. Over the past four years or so, Kasador has made a name for themselves in the indie scene, having accumulated hundreds of thousands of streams on the debut album and playing alongside established Canadian acts including Arkells, Sam Roberts Band and The Glorious Sons. Their music offers a sincere glance at personal issues and reckoning with the weight of the world and has gotten audiences hooked across the country.

Kiwi jr., Backseat Dragon, Mushy Gushy

Kiwi jr.’s appearance in the Market is a can’t-miss event for indie lovers. This Toronto-based outfit makes music that is strikingly self-aware and relatable, often touching upon topics such as the difficulty of reconciling one’s artistic aspirations with professional obligations in an exorbitantly priced metropolis as well as the general malaise that is often omnipresent within the confines of late-stage capitalism. They will be flanked that evening by Ottawa locals Backseat Dragon and Mushy Gushy in a celebration of all things indie. Don’t miss it!

NOBRO

This all-female garage punk quartet has been blowing the roof off of any venue they find themselves in! NOBRO’s high-octane, hard-hitting music has won them the praise of some highly respected acts within the Canadian music scene, including PUP, Billy Talent, Alexisonfire and more. The band has toured alongside these same acts on various occasions, cementing their status as an essential component of Canadian punk. See them for yourself when they stop by Club SAW this month!

Pony Girl

Pony Girl has been described as Ottawa “best-kept secret,” bringing together an eclectic variety of sounds and influences to create a distinct yet engaging signature sound. Their second album “Laff It Off” was released earlier this year and has received widespread acclaim for its approach to soundscaping, composition and exceptional performances by leading members Yolande Laroche and Pascal Huot. Come check out what all the fuss is about when they take the stage at the NAC this month!
