National Ballet of Canada | National Arts Centre (NAC) | April 12 - 14
The National Ballet of Canada injects raw physicality and dramatic
intensity into John Neumeier’s adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s tragic
play, The Seagull. The Russian writer’s masterful work lends
itself to the language of dance as Neumeier’s choreography centres on
illuminating pure emotion, while unveiling richly developed characters.
The strikingly beautiful narrative ballet depicts complex interlinking
love relationships peppered with reflections on the past, lost chances
and squandered possibilities. Employing a richly evocative score by such
disparate composers as Shostakovich, Evelyn Glennie, Tchaikovsky and
Scriabin, this is contemporary ballet at its best.
